FISHING

The fishing possibilities here on the outer coast are unique. Large shoals of fish are brought in by the tides. Torsken has a great advantage due to it's sheltered location. Even when strong winds blow in from the Atlantic Ocean, you can almost always find sheltered places to fish. High peaks and deep fjords carve out the landscape of inland Senja. If the weather is suitable, we strongly recommend a fishing trip out on the open ocean - to a 40m deep underwater plateau, with shoals of fish coming in to feed - even whales come to this spot to hunt for food. There is nothing strange about the name of the ferry between Gryllefjord and Andenes - it is known as "The Whale Route".

Explore the plateau even further out, and it plunges to a depth of over 400m. Here you'll find the deep water cod, on the hunt for herring and coalfish. You may also discover another fish lurking in the depths, th wolf fish (also known as sea catfish) waiting to strike fiercely at any lures that hang around too long or dare to get too close. Or maybe it's time to stop, let the boat drift with the current, and see if the big halibut are around.

The possibilities are many, and you can adapt your fishing technique for certain species. Change course and head for the light buoy if you're looking to catch bream. If you're fishing for fighting mackerel, we recommend the bay on the way into Gryllefjord. Cod, seithe, bream, wolf fish, haddock and pollack are the usual species, and catching a halibut or a grey gurnard could really make your day.
